Sunday Cooking: Mish-mosh

Yes, it's Thursday. Do not adjust your monitors. :)

It's been a rough week, and while I didn't think I did much in the way of cooking, somehow we've stretched it through the week so I figured I should post about it.

Also, I managed to take a few photos of outfits (GASP), and I bought new sandals. Yay, summer!

Lunch has consisted of all my favorite foods of the moment, cutely packaged up in little portion-controlled containers.

There was another batch of spaghetti squash au gratin

Untitled

(and one of cauliflower au gratin for Hubby)

and a black-eyed pea and cucumber salad. (A recipe I make at some point every summer.)

Untitled

Wasn't completely in love with how this turned out this time. I used a bag of frozen peas and boiled them, but they were really mushy in a way that fresh or canned peas do not get. Plus I didn't have enough feta, and I omitted olives for Hubby, so it was missing a good dose of salt it needed to give it enough flavor. Hubby liked it though!

Lastly, there have been lots and lots of strawberries. Sometimes with yogurt at lunch, sometimes with a slice of angel food cake as dessert at night.

Untitled

I didn't get any pictures last night, but Hubby grilled a couple of frozen crab cakes for me (he had a burger) and a pineapple cut into long strips. Warm, carmelized pineapple was an excellent side dish, then I finished off the meal by cutting the rest of it up and piling it into a bowl with cool strawberries and soft angel food cake. No pun intended, but it was heavenly.

+++++++

It's been hot this week, and both Hubby and I have been stressed about work so there are nightly chats on the patio under the umbrella while he grills our dinner. George likes to come out and join us. I think he really likes the feel of the warm cement under him.

He is such a weirdo. :)

++++++

My hair is much longer this summer, and I am rather enjoying it. My new stylist gave me a long bob; a lot of the time I have been letting it naturally curl up at the edges instead of forcing it to curl under with a brush and blow dryer, and it just feels healthier and more energized.

Untitled

This is definitely the summer of draping blouses, although some work better than others. I love the vibrancy of the the hot pink of this Old Navy blouse, as well as the drape at my shoulders. It buckles weirdly at my waist, though, which doesn't photograph well. Oh well! My chunky smoky quartz statement necklace and a gold bracelet add the right amount of dressiness for super-hot weather.

Untitled

Another variation on the same sandals and black pants look, this time with a coral faux-wrap sweater from Forth & Towne (boy, I still miss that store), white tank and tri-stone necklace. The wind was blowing every which way that morning, so this is the best shot I got.

Untitled

Sheila has been doing neutrals month over at Ephemera, which inspired this combo that I have been wearing like crazy. Target short-sleeved cardigan and this darling tie tank from Lands End -- that's the whole outfit. I am having a pair of white modern Gap bootcut pants hemmed right now (my first white pants maybe ever!) and I am really curious to see if I can wear this top combo with that too.

Funny, I just realized I have been wearing the same Clarks olive wedge sandals in all 3 shots. I have been rotating through my other ones, I swear! The flat sandal craze has been intriguing me, too; most of mine are heeled wedges in various colors (turquoise, orange, nude, olive, etc) which are great for work. But I wanted some for play, too. Behold!

Untitled

I know, right?!

The Sam Edelman Gigi's are one of the sandals of the season, and come in a million colors. I debated going for the mixed-print pair, but in the end I could not resist the stripes.

The other pair I got were the DV by Dolce Vita Archer's, another hot sandal of the season. I needed a blue casual pair to go with my maxidress for our summer vacation, and I couldn't resist these when I saw them on Corporette.

The last new shoes I am getting are a pair of summer walking shoes, for exercise. (Yes, I said it.) How can anyone say "no" to walking if they have these adorable New Balance Classics in their closet? On sale for $49, too!

(I am exchanging the 9s for a 9 1/2, but overall they look and feel great.)

++++++

So, food, outfits, random cat photo, shoes. I think I covered all the necessary topics! Am I forgiven for skipping a few days/weeks of posts? :)

  1. Ooh, thanks for linking those New Balance shoes! I've been looking for something lightweight for my commutes, since flip-flops aren't very supportive. These look so perfect for summer!

    1. You are welcome! I thought they would work for commuting too; they've got a nice light feel to them, not too weighted or thick.

  2. I especially like the "neutral" outfit - and the sandals are like "WOW"! All of them.

I'm curious to know what kind of dressing (if any) you put on your pea salad. It looks interesting/good!

    1. The recipe calls for olive oil, lemon juice, oregano and pepper, all whisked together and then tossed with the veggies and peas. I added more Penzey's Wall of Flavor and extra salt when I omitted the olives.

  3. Your hair looks gorgeous! Love the length, love the casual, slightly tousled look.

So the flat sandals - are they comfortable? I keep looking at them, but the zero arch support keeps me from taking the plunge. They are so cute and fun, though!

I was impressed that George was sticking around until I realized there's a leash holding him...too cute with his lazy self!

    1. Thanks! Actually my hair reminds me of yours, although I will never get as much bounce and vitality. :)

I haven't worn the new ones much but I do have other flat sandals. They're fine but not for all-day walking. I will be putting the stripes once to the test this weekend so I will report back!

Actually George would probably be okay on the patio without his leash; he sticks close to Hubby most of the time, and we just let the leash hang loose without holding onto it. I just make him wear it just in case; the patio ends right into a side road so if he made a quick bolt when a car was coming or if a neighbor was walking their dog, it would be horrible.

    1. Thank you! The tank is cotton -- even better for summer! I bet you would rock it with those awesome floral capris.

  5. Thank you for the shout-out, hon! :) You look awesome in the neutrals, but I love that hot pink blouse on you - va va voom!

Hee, George is so sweet - look at that fuzzy tum!

Hmmm...you're a 9-9.5?? We are the same size in shoes! Let me know if you ever see a pair of mine that you covet - I'll put your name on them if I decide to pare down (and no, the Fluevogs aren't going anywhere).

    1. Thanks back at ya, Sheila! I can't believe I haven't been by to comment much this month but I am avidly following on Reader.

Oooooh, thanks for the offer; I will keep my eye out if any appeal; I know you like to cycle through your shoes and clothes. :)

  6. Your hair looks great a little longer.

I think the neutral outfit is super flattering on you...although they all look very summer cute.

You inspired me to get a Bento box..and the Mr. Bento for hot foods...love them both!

    1. Thanks! My box Bento tends to get more of a workout in the summer, and the Mr Bento in the winter with soups. :) But I would be lost without both of them.

  7. The neutral outfit is my fav too, mostly because it's 95+ here and the colors look cool. You look great and I like the longer hair.

I love olives in bean salads and my husband doesn't so I'm working my way through a huge bowl of it. They're very filling but have some downsides :)

Were the peas too crunchy uncooked? I usually bank on frozen veggies having been blanched before they were frozen and don't cook them hardly at all.

    1. I owe the long hair to you; you had commented a while back that it was long, and I realized that I would like to keep it that way. So when I finally did get my butt in for a cut, I asked the new stylist to not chop it off. Voila!

The bag said they needed to be cooked fully, so I did. Next time I will let them defrost and decide if they only need a short cook time. Or I will just stick with dried; they're not hard to cook, they just take some planning. I had hoped that the frozen ones were cooked so I was disappointed I hadn't read the package in the store, and then even more disappointed at how they turned out.

  8. Yay a Kristen post! (I look forward to your posts!) You are looking great. I have those Gigi sandals too, but I find the footbed a bit too flat/hard for me so they don't get worn often. I love the look, though.

Love the idea of strawberries and angel food cake. Yum.

    1. Good to know on the Gigi's! I haven't worn them yet out of the house, but I was testing the flexibility of the footbed for that very reason. Like I said to Shelley above, I don't think of flat sandals as all-day walking shoes, more for quick hits and fun outings. That's why I got such cute colors. :)

I found a grocery store that has a pound-cake sized angel food cake that is so good, and perfectly shaped and sized for the two of us. :) Those bundt ones are just too daunting, LOL.

  9. I really like the tan cardi outfit on you. Looks great.

    The DV sandals are cool.

    Fun post.

    Happy weekend.
