Monday: Coming out of hiding

DSC_4360DSC_4366

This sweater jacket is perfect for the chilly fall weather we're finally having. I paired it with a new aubergine cowlneck long-sleeved AT top, my black Semantiks pants, and my burgundy Franco Sarto patent heeled oxfords.

Hmmm, what else? Oh yeah, I completely changed my hair.

It wasn't supposed to be this drastic a change; I had planned on going a little darker at my color appointment on Saturday. But I wasn't clear with my colorist that I meant darker BLOND, and she was thinking closer to my roots. Ooops -- that's the peril of being hard of hearing in a noisy salon; sometimes I don't catch things I really needed to hear. It all worked out okay, though; I do like the color a lot. It's just a strange adjustment from being a blond. Historically, I don't do well when I am not blond, but I am going to give it a try!

The problem is I really don't like the cut. I've been going to my stylist for years, and usually when she suggests things they turn out great, but this one...this one is not working for me. I think it's because I had this exact cut when I was a kid, and it was a traumatic experience. It was boyish right at the time in my life where I didn't need to be teased for looking like a boy, and it took a really long time to grow out. And every time I look at myself right now, I am having flashbacks to that awkward time of my life, and I feel awkward and embarrassed and anxious.

Gee, quite a bit of baggage I'm throwing onto this poor old haircut, isn't it? I wish I could be more rational about it, but I can't. Not quite yet.

(Okay, that shot came out well. I wish I felt as relaxed as I look!)

The cut overall isn't that bad, but the front has me traumatized. I can't figure out how to style it. It took me two tries this morning; I had to soak my entire head twice and start from scratch with the blow dryer, and I wasn't happy with the last look either. Sigh. My stylist said to come back in two weeks after I let it grow and she would fix it; I was trying not to freak out but she knew I didn't like it.

This should serve as a reminder not to do two impulsive changes with my hair at once. I can't handle more than one!

  1. I love your hair, and that sweater looks sooooooo cozy. I've been looking for a really long one like that to no avail.

  2. I'm going to be totally honest with you. I like your hair better when it is a little bigger BUT I like the color. In a week it will be perfect, you'll see.

  4. I really like the color, Kristen. I could also see the hair really working for you, especially as it grows out more (I think Nurmisur is on the right track!) Have you tried playing with texturing products like pomade to create more volume/piecyness and emphasize the new texture?

  5. P.S. Thanks for the encouragement about running. I do want to continue with it, and I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who has had to take the program a bit slower by necessity.

I haven't completed a 5k race yet, but I *have* run a couple 5k stretches on my own at home around the hilly neighborhood, and got through it okay. So I guess now it's all about increasing that endurance training until a 5k becomes a breeze.

  6. Wow, I'm really digging your new hair! The color has a wonderful depth to it, the cut frames your face nicely, and you look feminine and lovely. I have found that whenever I make a dramatic change with my hair, it takes me about a week to feel comfortable with it, so I think you should just give yourself some time. You look great though. :)

  7. Hello!
    You look fab!
Maybe you don't like the cut because, as you wrote, it resembles one you use to wear as a child; now to see the same hair only over an *older* (meaning: adult) face is what is throwing you off. It makes you focus on all kinds of details of how your face is now more mature etc. How we appreciate a haircut (or not)is personal and subjective. So I would say: go back and have something different done.

But really, for anyone who has not seem the child before, you _really_ look very good. The colour is especially flattering.

    Just my two cents
    ;-)

  8. I have the same reaction whenever I get a pixie cut (my mom's default cut for me as a kid) - everyone loves it on me, but all I see is me as an unhappy child.

I really like the colour, Kristen! I'm not so bothered about the cut, but play with it! It looks nice and thick, so try playing up the messiness?

  10. FA, the sweater is from Old Navy this season. I think it's gone from the website but they may still be in stores.

Nurmisur, I appreciate the honesty. I like it bigger too!

Bianca, the color has grown on me now. The sweater was an instant fave. :)

Kari, I do use several kind of product, but it doesn't seem to be helping right now. Hopefully it will grow fast, LOL. The running will come eventually; I just stuck with it and now I really enjoy it -- and even more amazing, I can DO it, not just the short spurts that were in the beginning. I never thought I would get better than 5 minutes in a row, but eventually I did. Be patient with yourself, and enjoy the process.

Anons (both of you), thanks for the excellent advice and observation. And the compliments. :)

Sheila, yes I can understand being traumatized by a pixie cut. I am living it this week! I'll try to keep playing with it and finding something that I can deal with while it grows out.

Eednic, that's very sweet. The color has grown on me a lot, I will admit.
