Navel Gazing

OMG IT IS FINALLY NAVEL ORANGE SEASON.

Clementines are lovely little treats, but my heart belongs to navel oranges. Less tangy than tangerines, sweeter than grapefruit, navel oranges are my favorite fruit. They are seedless and pulpy and oh so yummy over the long winter.

I even like their funny little belly navels.

Poking my fingernail in that thick skin, I try to peel it in one long loop. I never succeed.

I look forward all year to navel orange season; like all fruits now they can be found in the store all year long, but their flavor is at their best January to March. The last couple of years I was on diets that restricted fruits, and I missed the flavor window. NEVER AGAIN.

They peaked just this week. Time to have another!

  1. I miss this blog being more about fashion and your outfits... The food posts don't really interest me all that much, but others may feel otherwise. I really like your sense of style and enjoyed seeing all of your outfits - at ANY weight! I hope you bring more of that back soon.

    1. Anon, I appreciate your honesty and your opinion. Truthfully I haven't been inspired in my outfits lately; I have been rotating the same dozen ones for a couple of months. It's kind of monotonous, and easy, right now. I suppose I could show you guys that. It might be interesting for me to figure out how often I am repeating items...because it feels like the same ones every week!

  2. I didn't realize this was navel orange season, I always associate oranges with Christmastime. Looking forward to some wonderful oranges myself!

  3. I've been eating a ton of Clementines, but I'll have to pick up some oranges this weekend. P.S. I love your blog and I appreciate the variety, it's just a reflection of what you're into at the time.

    1. Thanks for the support, Kim. Oranges actually just came into season; they were a little bitter up until this week.

  4. I'm with Kim. I've been star-strunk by Clementines at the expense of navels.

You reminded me that I do love the big guys -- come Saturday they're in my cart.

    1. Ha, I have been too -- but like I just commented to Kim, the navels have only peaked this week. I've been trying them throughout December and January and they were too bitter. But now the clementines are starting to get out of season, and oranges are coming on strong. Enjoy them while it lasts!
